This is a large cup retailed by Young and Veal of Columbia, South Carolina with the manufacturers’ marks for William Gale of New York, New York. Edward Young and John Veal were in partnership (if I read Catherine Hollan’s description in her book on South Carolina silver correctly) from April 1837 until April 1838 when Veal changed partners and went with William Glaze. While only in partnership one year they seem to have sold, based on the examples shown in Holland’s book, quite a few fashionable items from New York silversmiths. The cup is inscribed with the following intriguing engraving: "Doctr. T Wells from M Martin as a small token of gratitude for kind professional services." That together with the oversized rendition of a cup must have been a fitting gift for your favorite doctor. IP: Logged |
