My son, John, invited me over for dinner. During the meal I couldn't help noticing how beautiful John's roommate was. I had been suspicious of a relationship between John and his roommate but I just couldn't seem to find a polite opening to ask about it. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, I became certain that there was more between John and the roommate than met the eye. But before I could ask directly, John volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking mother, but I assure you, Julie and I are just roommates."

But I was certain that I was correct! And now I was very angry at John for not admitting it to me, his loving and caring mother, what was so obviously the truth. For the rest of the evening we were all polite and avoided the subject. Before going home, I did something that I have never done before....

A few days later I came home and on my answering machine was the following message:

"Mother, it was very nice having you over for dinner. I was wondering if you remember the wonderful Gorham sterling gravy ladle that I got from you? Since the other night I haven't been able to locate it. I'm not saying you 'did' take a gravy ladle from my house, and I'm not saying you 'did not' take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Any insights? Love ya, John".

I called John back and left the following message on his machine:

"John, its Mother calling. (Pause) I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep with Julie, and I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with Julie. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the Gorham gravy ladle by now. Love ya, Mom"
