At a recent party I was lucky enough to find someone to talk silver with. She said a friend of hers had found an old heavy sterling spoon while gardening and had a lot of fun discovering its history. I'd forgotten until she asked, but I once found a piece of silver too.

Years ago, just after I was married, my husband and I lived in an apartment on the next to the top level of a building owned by the university and set aside for junior faculty--lots of young families there. When we moved in, I noticed that the kitchen sink drained slowly. One of the maintenance people came to look at it and discovered a nice little sterling silver baby fork blocking the pipe.

I tracked down the people who had lived in the apartment before. Luckily they had not moved too far away. The fork did not belong to either of their two children. They had lived there for six years and hadn't noticed the slow-draining sink. It struck me that they might not have spent much time in the kitchen.

I never found the owner of the fork. It was tarnished, but polished up beautifully and is tucked away somewhere with my children's baby silver. If you know of anyone who lost a baby fork down a drain in Princeton NJ, Scott has my e-mail address. Have any of you ever found silver?
