I have a roger bros. spoon dated 1847 and a plain silver small cup dated 1881 that says Roger Bros. heritage and Oneida Ltd. Could any one tell me about these items.

Thanks so much

Rogers 1847 is in fact the name of the company, and not the date (it is the date of the founding of this particular variation of the endless variety of Rogers names used in 19th-century plated silverware).

The date on the cup might in fact be the date--often these cups were for babies, and are dated with their birth or christening years.

The "ROGER(s) BROS" spoon is silverplate. The "1847" is part of the trademark and does not suggest a date of manufacture. This marking was used by the International Silver Company.

As to the cup marked "ONEIDA LTD.", that was the manufacturer's name beginning in 1935. The company is now commonly called Oneida Silversmiths. "1881 ROGERS" was one of their brands.

With no indication of "STERLING" or "925", both pieces are silverplate. For most older pieces of silverplate, you can see where the plating has worn through down to the base metal.
