I've been trying to determine the marks on an older water pitcher I picked-up in fairly good condition.

Underneath the drum it has EPNS (each letter enclosed in a square), and gothic letters above that which read "M M C" or it might be "M M O" (am not sure about that last letter because of my middle-aged eyesight).

I guess it to be mid to late 20th century because it has an ice guard at the spout lip. It has pleasing classic (?) lines to the body, sits on a drum base, has a hollow-handle with nice, flowing lines, plus a band of flowers around the (shoulders?) broadest section below the spout. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until later that where the floral band trim rejoins itself near the handle, it was an imprecise strike & about 1/2" of double impressed trim, off just enough to not look right.

As for the markings, I thought only the British marked their wares with EPNS, however, it does not have any other UK marks. Did I pick-up a fake?

I appreciate any advice or additional research suggestions!

Marie

Don't recognize the M M C, but EPNS is a standard American marking; no need to think it's a ringer (would anyone bother faking silverplate?).

Yes, can't imagine that anyone in their right mind would fake silverplate! Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding about EPNS only used by the British. smile
