I purchased a tea server at an auction, Meriden B Company quadruple plate 878 is stamped on the bottom. It stands about 14" tall, and is very ornate and etched.

Sorry I don't have photos at this time.

Can you give me more info about the company that created this piece.

It's very beautiful.

Meriden Britannia Company was the first of the large electroplating companies to boom in the middle of the 19th century, making Meriden, CT., the electroplate capital of the country. It began in 1852 as a britannia ware maker (i.e. pewter) and by 1855 had started producing electroplated britannia as well as plating on German (nickel) silver and white metal. They used the "Quadruple Plate" mark until 1896.

Is there a book that I can possibly find a picture of it or similar one?

I'll have to throw myself on the mercy of the forum on this one. Silver plate manufacturers produced hundreds of different forms and scores of variations in style. Unless there are large collectors guides to plated goods (there might be, but I don't know of them, since we don't collected plated things regularly here), it's hard to know where you'd find a picture of your exact piece, or even one similar. There are here and there old period catalogues from the silver companies, and these are great, if you can find them. But we don't even know for sure the maker of your piece, so that makes it harder.

I assume you have an urn of some type, one with a spigot, rather than a piece that can be poured from. But I am not sure. Not knowing the exact form you have makes it hard to give a definitive answer. As far as I know, there are no large scale guides to plated hollow ware. There are guides to flatware plated patterns. If this can be connected to a flatware pattern it would be more interesting. The four made in the 19th century that are generally tied that way are Charter Oak, Assyrian Head, Italian and Renaisance. Knowing the maker is a very tricky procedure as the name stamped is only that of the ultimate producer. Certain parts such as figures, rims, handles and so on were made by small manufacturers and sold to bigger shops. So certain finials will show up on the products of an array of makers. Without a picture it is hard to say much about this. Is it on a stand that allows it to swing?
