I have an old piece (footed serving plate - about 13in diameter) with four marks on the back. They look like a 4-sided cross, a standing lion with raised paw (but the tail is not right for the English silver hallmark), an elaborate capital letter D and a lower case letter d. The center of the plate is elaborately etched with leaves and flowers and the border is applied grape clusters with vines and leaves. Can anyone help me identify the maker and maybe the metal content? Thanks!

The marks and the design immediately make me think "English silverplate". English platers used marks much like yours, and the grape motif is a traditional English style. I will see if I can't locate your mark in a reference book.

I hope this helps!

How old is it?
Is it silverplate?

Are you sure that's a D and not a gothic L? An Ld for Limited is common on English plated goods.
