I have a few silver/silver plated pieces from my mother. I'm new at this and need information. What does it mean and who can I contact to see if its worth anything?

1. Coffee server, creamer, sugar bowl with lid. On the underside is American Silver Plate Co. 607.

2. A two piece cake/pie slice server with wooden handles. Underneath it has 18-8; Queen City Silver Co. and what looks like a half circle of lettering "c i n t l o".

3. An approximately 12" circular tray With Monarch Silver Co. 1214 And a trademark symbol that looks like the modern day swirl of recycling without the arrows.

I've been searching the web and your site seems the best for information. Anything that would shed light on these pieces would be appreciated.
Thank you.

1. Over the years several business used American Silver Plate Co as either a business name or trade mark. We would have to see a photo of the mark.

2. Queen City Silver Co. began in Cincinnati, Oh, c.1888. Out of business by 1949. The 18-8 sounds likes a stainless steel mark.

3. I don't know anything about Monarch Silver Co. but I do recall once seeing a silverplate pickle jar by them.

As to who to contact you can request information about professional appraisers in your area by clicking here.

Thank you for your quick response. I really don't feel these are any priceless antiques or rare finds, but I've always been curious as to their value and history. I'll just keep polishing and appreciating them in my hutch.
Thanks again!!!

You might only want to polish the silver plate once and then wash your items regularly with soap and water. If you polish too much or too vigorously you will just wear away the soft silver leaving the base metal showing.

Re: "12" circular tray With Monarch Silver Co. 1214 And a trademark symbol that looks like the modern day swirl of recycling without the arrows."

Monarch Silver Co. was a trademark used by three different companies: (1) the Standard Silver Co. of Toronto, Ltd., (2) the Knickerbocker Silver Co., and (3) the National Silver Co.

The first company also used a trademark similar to the "chasing-arrows" recycling symbol. They began operation in 1893 and merged with the International Silver Co. of Canada, Ltd. about 1912.
