Can anyone assist in answering a question about a determining whether or not a piece is sterling by the manufacturers name and number stamped on a piece. I have an item stamped FB Rogers Silver Co with the number 5036. Without a chemical test can I determine if it is sterling?

Thanks,
Dick

We have enough information here to tell that your piece is silver plate, not sterling. F.B. Rogers was one of several silver plate companies with "Rogers" in their names. F.B. Rogers was founded in Massachusetts in 1883, and plate was, at least until recently, still being manufactured under the F. B. Rogers name. There is no evidence of sterling ever being produced with an F. B. Rogers trademark.

In addition, almost all sterling made in the United States since about 1880 is marked STERLING. An American company like F. B. Rogers, if they made sterling, would have marked it as such.

At any rate, you definitely have a piece of plate. I hope this helps!
