Hi--

I found this tea set in my attic. I'm not even sure if it's silver, but it's tarnished like silver.

Please help me with identification.

It desperately needs to be cleaned, but it is otherwise in great shape. I have no idea what country it originated from, or anything about it's history.

I had a hard time getting a decent photo of the hallmark, so I'll describe it as best I can:

A shield with a horse's head in profile, some type of upside down heart with scrolling around it, and a crest with 3 birds with long pointed beaks in profile. All of these pieces are also marked Hand Chased 3290A.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

The "horse head in a shield, two angels? in a shield, three birds in a shield" mark (not a hallmark) is shown in Rainwater/Redfield's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers", page 384, "unascribed marks".

Does the tray have the same marks?

Thanks. I think that they are Angels in the second icon. The footed tray is marked under the lip with a crown and 4 gothic letters that are hard to make out, but I think they are as follows: S G T P

How can I found out more about these pieces? Thanks.

Some more info: The tea set has very small light engraving ner the makers mark that says 187-26

The tray has the light engaving that looks as though it says 109/4 1881. Does this help.

Can you also post a photo of the marks on the tray?

I am guessing that the "SGTP" is "SGEP" and that it stands for Sol Goldfelder electro plate. It is not a documented mark.

SG founded the Goldfelder Silverware Co. Inc. in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932. He began using a trademark with a very similar crown (but with a cross on top) in 1947. Silverplated trays were one of his products. The firm was renamed Birmingham Silver Co. some time prior to 1957 and, in 1957, moved operations to Yalesville, Connecticut. Subsequent marks of the company also used marks with the crown with the cross on top.

The "light engraving" marks were probably added by somebody (like a pawn broker) after manufacture and are not reliable indicators of anything.

Hope this helps! (Did this answer your questions?)

My first thought as well. I have seen the crown with GOLDFELDER incuse below on pieces, so they may have used several variations.

As for the tray, there is a cross on top of the crown, it just didn't photograph well. How might I estimate it's age and possibly assign a value to such an item.

I would also like to find out more about the style, age and value of the tea set. Suggestions?

Estimating the age of the tray requires an assumption as to when Goldfelder used the "SGEP" mark. I'd assume that it was some time between 1932 (when he founded the company) and 1947 (when the trademark was issued).

Without knowing who made the tea set I wouldn't make a similar assumption as to age. However, it also appears to be a twentieth century reproduction of earlier and classic English styles.

One way of determining the retail value of the tray (and tea set) is to find what items of similar style and condition are selling for on eBay. Have you tried that?

Rainwater also shows it as a mark of the Friedman Silver Co, Inc., Brooklyn, New York, "creators of fine holloware since 1908, bought by the Gorham Corporation in 1960."
