Anyone know what this is? It measures 3 5/8" long by 1 1/8 - 1 1/4" round/oval. High relief design of many men with long weapons... hubby thinks it's a Conquistador / Christopher Columbus time period scene. Some men have helmets... some have pilgrim type hats. Marked DENMARK with a fish symbol.

The lining doesn't look original... it's felt... two pieces on one side... three pieces on the other side... not very evenly set.

Someone on another board suggested this might be a minaudiere (miniature hard-body purse)... I went on to researching that possibility but didn't find anything even close to this and nothing this small. The scene is not a feminine scene either.

A roll of quarters fits in this thing.

It is probably a cheroot case; the Danes had a taste for rather dry, thin cigars of the sort that needed a hard body carrying case just as this. The size would be right.

I still don't know what it is. These are all the suggestions I've received so far:

Poker/casino chip holder.... match holder... snuff box... cheroot case... eyeglass case... lipstick holder... a case just to hold a few smokes... a case that held the men's jewelry for the national costume (Scandinavian).

Hey Jen,

Just got this Email on your info that I had sent to a person who publishes on Danish silver:

"The picture is a very bas copy of Rembrand´s painting the Nightwatch. A
lot of boxes and cases are made with this illustration.

I think the object is a snuffbox. However it culd also be a case for a
pair of glasses (a pincenez (is this english??))"

met vriendelijke groet,
Janjaap Luijt
