Hi! I apologize if this has been covered, but I looked through the forum and didn't see it. My friend has a beautiful old-looking, double-bowl piece with a handle that she got at an auction. It has no stamps except the number "839" on the back.

She got it only because it's a nice design, but is curious if the "839" means coin-silver, nickel, etc., or is just a number from the maker. It does look like it may be silverplate.
Any help?
thanks ! ! !

The "839" does not mean mean "coin-silver or nickel" or any other kind of metal content. It could be "just a number from the maker". Without knowing who the maker is, it is impossible to say what the number means or even if the item is silverplate.

If you can post photos, someone may be able to give you a better answer.

Hope this helps.
