I have a silver cup which was my father's--circa 1900. On the bottom of the cup is a circular logo. The center is a unicorn. he outer rim states Victor Silver Company. I can find nothing on the web about this company..Do you possibly have any info on it? Thanks,

quoting from Rainwater:

Victor Silver Co.
(See International Silver Co.)

The mark you described is the "Trademark of Derby Silver Co. on less expensive line. Variation used after 1922 by International on silverplated flatware for hotels, restaurants, etc."

(Scott, The photos are better but still big. I have set to the lowest pixel of 640. I'll next work on a smaller image or cropping.)

Both marks WGS mentioned are documented in Rainwater.

Thanks Stephen, I guess now I'm stuck and I'd better find myself a Rainwater's.

Note that quadruple plate marks were not used after about 1912. I'd guess that your Art Nouveau piece dates somewhere before that year.

Thanks Stephen - could you give me the exact name of Rainwater's. I'm going to try to find one online if June does not have one for sale here.
Are there any other books, esp on European that you consider indispensible? Maurice suggests Helft's and I just bought a Davis, (but won't get to the states to pick it up for about a month.)

Heeeeere's Dorothy:

Rainwater, Dorothy T., Judy Redfield. Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers, Fourth Edition. Atglen, Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 1998. (ISBN 0-7643-0602-2)

When you say "European", do you mean continental Europe only -- if so, which countries? What kind of items -- flatware or holloware? What time periods? If you can narrow it down a little, I can tell you which ones I've found helpful.

Stephen, thanks for the scoop on Dorothy's book. I did not see any for sale on June's list, so I'll get right to it!

I have good references and contacts in GB so now I'm looking for reference material for Continental, mostly 1800s to early 2000s.

Since I always run across the French stuff I'm most desperate for something that has the French maker's marks... and in addition anything with the maker's marks for silverplate would be awesome! I make good use of my EPNS book for Sheffield and Close Plate - so the same for France would be a dream come true for me.

So far I've just gotten some provincial books like for Orléans, basse Bretagne and Ardennes.

I also bought "Les Poinçons du Monde Entier" - but it turns out to be little more than a simplified, less concise Tardy's sort of a book (and truly redundant if you have a Tardy's.)

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Hey, in the meantime - could you just send me a tiny bit on the Victor Silver Co. so I can close off my page on this piece. So far I know it's part of the Derby Silver Co. which became part of International Silver Co and due to the use of "Quadruple Plate" is pre 1912. If that's all there is to know, then so be it...

Merci!

"Les Poinçons du Monde Entier"
Who is this book by?
I use the simple Divis in combination with Tardy. While the latter has many times more marks and other information, Divis - unlike Tardy - can pretty well be trusted and shows some evidence that it has been edited by someone with a bit of judgement. Tardy has been re-printing decade after decade without ever correcting errors.

I'm not aware of any other published information on the Victor Silver Co. mark. If you really want to research it, the Baker Library at Harvard would be the place to start.
