For years, I have looked for an identification of a small teaspoon, presumably silverplated, which was marked Hydro Peebles. The name somehow reminded me of a cereal, but I never could find anything until today. Today, while doing one last search for this spoon, voila, there it was - Peebles Hotel Hydro, Peebles, Scotland! Who would have thought?

The mark on the back has always bothered me. As you can see from the picture, the mark isn't very clear but it has two initials (it appears to me to be E.B. & Co., another unknown symbol and what looks like a chicken wishbone! THAT is the symbol that piqued my curiosity.

Anyone have any information on that?

It looks to me like it might represent a rider's spur. Maybe the company made silver plated spurs? (If the proportions are right, I pity the poor horse that gets one like that in the ribs!)

You are right. It surely does look like a spur as well. Wish I could find a list of silverplaters in the UK! To me, that mark is one of the reasons I love this spoon.

Nice looking hotel too - I learn from their publicity, the hotel began in 1907. That at least gives you a starting date for your spoon.

I got as far as the picture of the hotel. I probably should have read into it more. Thanks for the tip. I will keep that in mind. And if I ever go to Scotland, that is one hotel I think I might like to visit!

Thank you, Patrick. Excellent page and I've bookmarked it along with a slew of other pages that I've found linked on this forum! This place is a mine of wonderful information.

Now, the assumption here is that the spur is an indication of spur silver. I'm going to go under that assumption for now, but I've seen no sites that show the marks of Edwin Blyde & Co.

I hadn't thought to do a search under "spur" and I'm always telling people to try a different approach to their searches! biggrin
