I have a silver creamer. It is marked on the bottom: "Victor S. Co."; the number "550041104"; the numer "81 in a square"; and the letter "C". Does anyone know what all this means and possibly the year it was made?
Thanks

Victor means is was made by International Silver sometime during the 20th century, or possibly the late 19th century. The long number generally is believed to indicate a stock number for ordering. The one in the square probably means a style or design or product line. Age can not be determined by a mark alone; a pic of the piece would let us give an estimate of age. This also can not be satisfactory as frequently plated patterns were made for decades. It can be a determination that something was made, say, between 1910 and 1985. which really does not narrow things down much.

The Victor Silver Co started in about 1895 as the trade name for Derby Silver Company's cheaper range. The name Victor continued after 1898 when Derby became one of the original members of the International Silver Company.
I have seen several rather nicely designed art nouveau pieces by Victor with the patent date of 1904. The mark is circular, with a horse in the centre, and the inscription "Victor Silver Co. Quadruple". Often there is a "B" beside the mark.
Internally, with the formation of IS, the Derby plant at Shelton became known as Factory B - this may account for the B stamp on pieces I have seen, and possibly the "C" on your piece, indicating a different factory within the group.
The "Victor S Co" mark seems later, and I believe that International reintroduced the brand in 1922 as one of their restaurant plate lines.
If Derby was factory B, does anyone know the letter codes for the other IS factories?
