Hi All,
My wife has a very ornate art nouveau silver plate hair brush and mirror. The design consists of a woman's bust, facing left, and a flower with lots of art nouveau curls and swirls. It is marked: 47 Derby Silver Co. Pat June 14, 19XX, Pat July 20, 1904. The first year is not legible. Can anyone tell me anything about this company? Any info would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.
Russ

Derby was an independent company from 1873 until 1898 when it joined in the forming of the International Silver Company. Their production of hollow ware was of high quality. It always seems to me that Derby concentrated on design. A great deal of the surviving production is of very high quality, frequently expressing the most recent design trends.

The history of Derby's marks after joining in IS is unclear. IS had a policy of using the trademarks of its founders but just how and when is unclear. No date can confidently assigned to something based solely on an IS mark, IMHO.
