I admittedly know virtually nothing about silver, but have recently acquired a pair of salts that may change that.

I've searched the SSF archives and have found little discussion regarding salts, so I'm hoping to get some help as to age and origin of my set.

There are no maker's marks anywhere on the set, but the spoons are marked ESPN. I don't have a clue as to whether the spoons are original to the set or not.

The silver seems to be of nice quality, with a good weight and feel to it. The inserts are an extremely dark cobalt and have almost a greasy feel. The set has a very tactile quality to it that I haven't found very often.

I have no intention of parting with these, and may just start a new collection. Any/all information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sets like the one you show have been produced for over 100 years. Sometimes they have maker's marks, sometimes they don't. My guess is lack of marks means a later date. Or may indicate they originally came in a box that carried the marks on it. Frequently, such sets were made in England and offered to the tourist trade. They are very nice, and well made. My further thought is the one with a top was meant for mustard or horseradish. Sorry not to be more definite about this.

Thanks, Dale. I hadn't even thought about mustard or horseradish, but that would explain the bigger spoon, wouldn't it? And to take the assumption a bit further, might suggest that the spoons are indeed original to the set?

Thanks again!
