Posted earlier but registered. Any information on an EBERLE silverplate serving tray would be appreciated. It is in need of a cleaning, and I will get a picture asap.

midnitesun,

I am sorry you haven't received a response. Perhaps it is because it is unclear what it is you are trying to find out. Please tell us what it you would like to know.

What follows is what we deleted from the General Silver Forum:

have already posted this on the silverplate forum but have yet to get any help... maybe if I post here someone can help or lead me in the right direction. I know nothing about this tray other then its been in the family for years and it has EBERLE Silverplate marked on the the rim on back.
I have enclosed 3 pics showing as much detail as I could without boring anyone. It is VERY details with a farm looking scene etched horses, farmers, landscape, as I said very detailed... any help is appreciated.

If I remember an earlier posting, you suggested a possible South American origin. I recently saw a "bombilla" or metal straw for drinking matté, a bitter herb tea popular in Argentina, Uruguay and parts of Brazil, so this strongly supports your possibility (although, likewise, it may be German produced to export to South America).
The rural scene on your tray also looks like "Gaucho culture", the local cowboys in this part of the world, who are admired for their country values etc.

I found a few items on the Internet marked Eberle Silverplate or Alpaca Eberle. Most of these items were matte or bomilla straws and cups or gaucho stirrups which would support a South American origin. My gut says circa 1925. I don't read Portuguese but believe Eberle is Eberle SA located in Brazil. Eberle SA is associated with Hercules S.A. a flatware maker. I don't think either company makes holloware anymore. In particular Eberle seems now to be an automotive metal, electric motor manufacturer. But they also have been making swords since 1923. If someone speaks/reads Portuguese then maybe they can research this further and confirm or correct the above.

A litlle more info:

  • EBERLE s.a. was established in 02 of April of 1896 by Abramo Eberle.
  • In 1918 became Abrano Eberle & Cia, a manufacturer of tableware and cutlery.

You might try contacting the company and if you can find someone who speaks English..... they might have a company historian.

Thank you for the interesting question. Looking at it, I am reminded of a series that International Silver sold in the 20's and 30's. These feature various Latin American scenes on trays etc. Some are clearly marked IS, others have a different mark that I never clearly understood. My impression now is that IS imported these from Eberle, did the usual haphazard marking and retailed them in the US. The most common one in this series, at least to me, features a woman standing on a balcony. Hope this helps, Dale

A random thought. Sometimes an origin can be hinted at by measurement. If the piece works out to fairly even inches it is probably English speaking world. If it works out to fairly even meters, it is not. What are the measurements both in inches and centimeters on these?

Not sure how you would like the measurements but I took them from handle to handle 23 3/4" and 60cm. From the actual tray itself across was 19" and 49.5cm and from top to bottom was 15" and 38cm. Hope this will help... I really appreciate your time and effort... Any suggestions on books I could pick up to find out more... I have looked on the internet but have found little or the info was in Portuguese, as Scott had said.

Thanks again for your help...
Diane
