Hi,

I'm not sure if we have the story straight, but my Granny who has passed away in the last year seemed to think that her Father had 2 of these silver sets made and kept one for himself and gave one to the Dutch royal family.

I was wondering if anyone knew how old it is and who the maker would be.

It has four markings on it. I have tried to explain them as best as I can below.

  • A lion in a hexagon, facing right with his head up and his tail up with the number 2 underneath the lion but still in the hexagon.

  • It also has a circle with a V in it.

  • V.K. stamped with either an oval ring around it or it may be the letter C or the letter G. I'm not sure.

  • And lastly it has a round stamp with what I think is a woman's head facing left and her hair is up and it has the letter B stamped into her hair. It could be a hat instead of hair.
If anyone would like a photo, just send me an e-mail at* [snip] *and I will forward one onto you. I have tried to put a link in but it won't work.

Any info would be great. I have been searching for so long and finally someone put me onto your forum for which I am most grateful.

Thank you

The lion with 2 indicates your set is silver, not silverplate, from Holland earlier than the 1950s (when the number 2 changed to II). The woman's head is Minerva and the B in her hair indicates the assay office.
