My wife bought a large dressing spoon at an estate sale thinking it was southern silver. But it has the marks / A / JD /&/ S / EP / and what looks like a lamp. It is very large and I am tring to find something out about it. Know it is likely Jame Dixon and Son because of the "EP" but it does not have the trumpet but the lamp. If anyone knows this mark could you inform me. I and my wife would be very thinkful.

Your spoon is made by JAMES DEAKIN & Sons - a large and successful firm based on its factory at Sidney Works, Matilda Street, Sheffield. Started c.1865 and most prolific c.1870-1910.
A visitor to the factory in 1886 had this to say (amongst a lot more):
"Messrs Deakin & Sons... The spoon and fork department is (also) an extensive one: and in silver and nickel, so great a quantity is produced every week that it seems marvellous where a market is found for them..."
This was published in full in the 'Jeweller & Metalworker', June 1st 1886 wink
