i have a pitcher that has an "M" in a shield (the shield is shaped like a US hwy marker), then a fleur de lis in a regular shaped shield, then a "C" with a simple crown above it are located in a third regular shaped shield. below these are the words "silver on copper". i have searched several places and have found this hallmark mentioned once or twice in this forum but have not seen the maker identified. does anyone know who the maker is? First of all, why do you thinkg your piece is silverplate? It sounds more like sterling. Without a picture, it is very hard to do more than guess at the marks. Swedish hallmarks have crowns over letters, and the "M" sounds like a date mark. Try to post a photo. Good luck and Happy New Year, IP: Logged |

My impression when confronted with this mark is that it indicates either a retailer or a line of tableware, not a maker. Usually 'silver on copper' is a 20th century convention. And again usually it places the item into a vague family of Sheffield reproduction/ adaptation silverware. Beyond that, my only understanding is that this is something in which virtually identical items can be found with a bewildering variety of marks. IP: Logged |
