Hello to everyone from South Carolina!

I am very new to this wonderful world of silver and seem to be having a hard time identifying all of the different makers and age of the items. Two questions here....

    1. Is there a really good online site that gives most makers, hallmarks and dates of silver as well as silver plate?
    and
    2. I found an interesting candelabra that is marked made in England E.P N.S Co. It has these cone shaped candle holders that can be removed.
Any ideas? Thanks a million! I'm thrilled to have found this site!

Welcome TLPnSC. You might want to check out our silverplate statement: Silver Plate Forum FAQ:

Generally, silverplate can not be dated from a mark alone.

Thanks Dale. So, I understand that it is difficult to 'date' silver plate but can you help with the maker 'N.S Co.'?

It probably is not "N.S. Co." EPNS usually stands for "electroplated nickel silver." I am not sure why the the Co. follows.

Thanks Tom.

Can you tell that I know nothing about silver??? lol!

I also think that it is more of a centerpiece instead of a candle. It has one large sconce type holder in the center and three other smaller ones around it. The 'sconce' looking holders look like bud vases.

Any other ideas out there?

Thanks again!

Hi,

NS Co is an American silver company called National Silver Company.

If you need a copy out of the silverbook by Dorothy Rainwater let me know and I can send you a protected file.

Best regards from Germany

It will take photos for you to hear more meaningful opinions of what the marks mean. Without photos the opinions most likely will remain vague and divergent. Photos of the marks and of the item please.

The green looking stuff you see is kind of gooey and looks like the stuff florist use to keep flowers in place.

Thanks again,
Teresa

I agree with the need for pictures. At least since 1900, the source I have indicates that National Silver Company labeled its wares as "National" not the abreviation NS Co. I still suspect EPNS is "electroplated nickel sivler," but let's wait for the photos.
