I am trying to get a sense of the background of this complex and ornate English silverplate tea service.

There is no one in the Virginia Beach area I can find who can tell me anything about it.

The oval salver, upon which it all sits is 31" handles included, or 26" without including the handles, and 21" wide. As one can see in the pictures it is heavily decorated and engraved, as is the entire service.

The service includes:

  1. a hotwater vessel and lid with stand and alcohol burner, insulating spacers on the handles of this and the other vessels are ivory;
  2. a tea pot and lid;
  3. a coffee potand lid;
  4. a creamer;
  5. a sugar bowl and lid;
  6. tea strainer, stand, and small plate;
  7. sugar tongs.
On the bottom of the vessels there is a hallmark of a trifoil outline with the initials N&B S (the S in the lower form of the trifoil) as well as the words
    Finest Quality
    Silverplated on Copper
    Made in England
The ensemble is very impressive, the sort of thing one might see at an embassy or, at the least, a very wealthy home.

It was purchased by my mother at auction sometime in the early 20s from a Vanderbilt estate, but clearly predates that era.

It has been lovingly cared for (for the past 10 years it has been packed away) and is in excellent condition. There is some wear from polishing, but no dents, or nicks.

I have attached several pictures on the theory seeing the service will say more than I can.
