Hi, I'm new to this site and I have an object that looks like a small footed scuttle. Two handles and engraved floral scroll work. Cigarrette dispenser? Sugar cubes? The item is well marked although it does not have the standard english hall marks. I have cleaned it and it appears to be silver and not plate. It has a few dings and they would reveal copper if it were plate. All I see is silver. The marks are in this order, line one: EP (three stars, one over two,all encircled)BM
line two: Made in England
line three: R

There are no Lions, Anchors or Castles. I'd like to know the factory and date of this piece. What factory had three stars? Many thanks and I will try to attach pictures or send e-mail pictures to anyone with information.

Thanks'
dave

EP (Electroplate) *** BP (Britannia Metal) -- no copper to see.

These little scuttles have been a popular silver plated novelty item for over 80 years. They vary somewhat from time to time. My impression, and it is only an impression, is that they are made to order. The design seems to be owned not by a maker but by a retailer or wholesaler. And, they are still made.
