I found a teapot or perhaps a coffee pot that has this info on the bottom. I'd like to know what it means. If anyone can help me with it, I'd surely appreciate it. Thank you.
Sara

ON THE BOTTOM:
Queen Bess (probably the pattern, right?)
Tudor Plate
Oneida Community(Oneida is mfr. and what is community???)

Yes, "Queen Bess" is the pattern name. "Tudor Plate" was a line of Oneida plated wares, but I've never known why they chose that name (they used many names over the years in addition to the Oneida name).

The company was called Oneida Community (at least until 1935, when it became Oneida Ltd.) because it was begun in the 1870s by the Oneida community, a religious commune in central New York. The commune dated to the late 1840s, a period when many such religious communes and groups were started in the area.

The company became widely known in the early 20th century through flashy magazine advertising. In the past year or so it has been in the local news because the plant in Oneida, NY, was shut down -- it was reportedly the last US domestic flatware plant, making both stainless and plated tablewares -- but it was recently announced that it would reopen, run by a new employee-owned company.

Tudor Plate was one of the many Oneida popular priced lines. The pattern name Queen Bess was one that Oneida really liked as they used it on two separate patterns. One is from the 20's, a sort of traditional looking style. The other is from the late 40's and features swoops of flowers. The second one was a Betty Crocker premium available into the mid 1960's.

Oneida is very prone to recycling names of patterns. They have used Patrician three times I am aware of.

So presumably this would be the earlier one, since the company is given as Oneida Community?

Not necessarily, as Oneida seems to have marked things in a sort of haphazard fashion. A picture would help enormously. There is a third possibility. That Onieda simply named a random line of holloware Queen Bess.
