I have a carving platter which bears the following marks:
BSCEP;
Lion Rampant (with wings), Thistle, Top of tower with arm sticking out of top, hand of arm holds hammer or hatchet;
*+*;
05204/16.

It weighs 3 lbs 2 oz, is oval shaped and stands on 4 short legs (or feet).

I have searched all sites listed in Google for the significance of these hallmarks, to no avail.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi there,

I have a good book on Scottish provincial and I don't think your platter is Scottish. It may perhaps be Dutch. The thistle however would still suggest Scottish. It would be good if you could post a photo or tell us if there is any makers mark. I posted a Dutch piece here before with pseudo hallmarks one of which was the arm and hammer.

Your piece is by Barbour Silver Company of Hartford CT. The EP stands for ElectroPlate.

Thank you both for your comments. WEV, I'm curious as to why such "Hallmarks" would be placed on an Electro Plated piece. Do they have any meaning in that context?

I looked up the company briefly (I know nothing about American Silver). It seems they were founded in 1892 and absorbed into the international silver company in 1898.

Thanks, Scotia. Very interesting. I'll see if I can find more about them on the internet.

Have you tried the Silver Salon search function? If you do you will find over 20 mentions of Barbour.
Search the Silver Salon for barbour

None. They are just trademarks -- the company used many versions -- attempting to imply some connection between their silverplate and British sterling goods of real quality. Advertising has not really changed much in the last 200 years.

Thanks SM & WEV. Read all the posts in the search and your replies. A nice little education. You are right, "Plus ca change..." (The more it changes, the more it is the same.)

This is a wonderful forum you have.
