I just recently bought at a thrift store a glass bottom mug/tankard. And I can't find anything about it. It appears to be either pewter or silver. The bottomw is stamped with the following:

Made in England
8965
3
Estd 1750
And it has what appears to be a mark of a hand clasping a bunch of flowers, or a flame, or a staff.

It looks like it is a commemorative, special occasion type mug cause it is inscribed on the side with "Wellington" and 1954.

Can anyone give me an idea where to look to find out who made this or how to tell if it is silver or pewter? It is a really cool looking mug that needs some shining up.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Tim

Welcome to the forum. It is usually good to post a digital photo with your question. However, I can say that the piece is not silver. English sterling (92.5% silver) is marked with a lion passant (walking), a town mark, and a date letter. The piece could be plate, although I doubt that as well. Although not required as are the sterling marks, plate marks such as EPNS for electroplated nickel silver or A1 for the thickness of the silver layer are quite common. The "made in England" label suggests that the mug may be some sort of souvenir. The number is probably a stock number for a mass produced item.

Hope this helps,
Tom

The silverplate "logo" for Atkin Brothers was a hand grasping plumes.
