I saw an interesting English plate biscuit barrel online and it didn't appear to have any marks. I emailed the seller to check and he replied that "no makers marks, typical of many high quality early silver plated wares." Is this an accurate statement or is someone doing a sales job?

Thanks, Kelly

At the dawn of the electroplating age, there was controversy regarding how they should be marked. One clear requirement was that nothing that could be confused with sterling marks would be used. So, some early plate has no marks. But so does some later plate and current plate frequently comes with paper labels. Bisquit barrels are particularly prone to this problem. I don't know why.

Hi there,

First let me say that I have been dealing in silver and silver plate for a while, and I love good plated wares, both "old Sheffield
plate", and electroplate

When dealing with older silver plated goodies, some are marked and some are not.
Unmarked pieces have to stand on their own, as to quality. Marked pieces should also stand on their own, but they have that additional piece of information, which makes them more sellable, because everyone likes a name.

A name provides a reference, a date perhaps some famous maker or shop. All provide a leg up on a piece with no name.

Now, a piece with no name can provide an aura of mystery. It can also be an orphan.
Like Nicholas (Dickens), it has to make its own way.

Purchase it if you like it. Because it is nameless, it should cost you less.

Always happy to help..

Marc

Thank you once again Dale for your thoughts. You have a great breath of knowledge.

Thank you too Marc for your thoughts. I like your orphan analogy. The barrel is I think quite nice with good sharp and intricate detail. The barrel part is actually cut glass with a fairly elaborate silverplate frame. Is there a history of biscuit barrel forms that might give a further clue as to date? I am finding it difficult to place stylistically. It does have a nice sheaf of wheat finial on the hinged cover.
