I'm trying to find out if Meriden Britannia Company ever manufactured Sterling Silver Trays, or only plated trays, I recently acquired a tray, manufactured by Meriden, numbered 05010, with an "S" under the numbers.

How can I determine the age of the tray?

The Meriden Britannia Co. began producing a line of sterling holloware in 1895.

However, I would guess that your tray is not sterling and also has a circular Meriden mark with a scale indicating that the item is electroplated. A star between the scale pans would indicate electroplating on a nickel silver base -- the lack of a star would indicate electroplating on a white metal base. The "05010" mark would also indicate electroplated silver. The "0" before the "5010" would indicate that the tray has silver soldered mounts. The mounts would be the handles and any applied trim.

A "No. 5010, Chased" oval tray was pictured in Meriden's 1867 catalog. It was available in sizes from ten to thirty inches (two inch increments). It had a Greek key design, a beaded edge, and ornate handles.

I would guess that the "S" on your tray is not part of the mark, but something that was added after manufacture.

Does this sound like what you have?
