I recently purchased a set of flatware. It has National Silver Co. and what looks like a small crown with the letters kes inside the crown. the dealer told me this was silver. Can anyone tell me if it is for sure and what the kes means? Also, how can I date this set? Thanks very much.

Well, there's silver and then there's silver, especially where dealers are concerned. National Silver made both sterling and silverplated flatware until 1945. If yours does not say sterling on it, it is plate. I have no idea what the KES might mean, but the company had several divisions, both here and in England; perhaps it indicates one of them. Or it may indicate the actual manufacturer that produced the goods.
