Hi,

I'm sure everybody has had a few of these and I thought I would share some of mine.

The first is a toddy ladle, which looks and feels like silver with absolutely no base metal showing through. The marks look pseudo but I went with it anyway.

The second is a fork, which I feel may be French but is certainly plate. I bought it without inspecting it closely enough. I had a look at the most obvious places for wear (ends of prongs, etc) and couldn't find anything until I inspected it more closely and found a small patch of wear. Whenever I buy anything remotely French, it more often than not turns out to be plate - they must have great quality plate. the marks on the fork are "AK" beneath a crown, a head, "G.P" and another head.

I was hoping others would be willing to share their mistakes i.e. bits that turned out to be plate or weren't what you thought they were like modified or faked marks on real silver, and we might avoid some of these mistakes in future.

Speaking of silverplate masquerading as solid silver, watch out for these marks:

The items that faked me out were a poorly struck and finished kings pattern serving pieces, with rough file marks on the edges. I believe someone indicated that these are made in Italy.

I have seen the product "Sterline" advertised as solid sterling silver before. "SterlinE" was actually just a deceptive, trademarked product name for silverplate. I have mostly seen it on matchsafes and pins from ca 1905.

The number "90" on some European items (i.e. 20th century Dutch souvenir spoons) means silverplate, not 90% silver.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies so far. "SterlinE" is a good one, there are some weird and wonderful marks.
