I acquired this early 19th century OSP pedestal sugar bowl???on a whim and with not enough hesitation. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

I have my doubts. First, why is the interior gilded for a sugar bowl? Wouldn't gilding be down because whatever was being put in the bowl like acid sweets or bon bons that would react with silver? It appears to have a lead lined bottom. The decoration under the rim- the ribbed decoration and the anthemion type decoration look applied to the body of the bowl. There is a glint of copper appearing on the edges of the square base. Perhaps it was a piece of OSP that was replated at some point? Measures 4.5" H x 5" in diameter of bowl.

I love Old Sheffield Plate and think your bowl is a very good example.
I really can only guess about the gold wash. It may be original or it may have been done later; either because the owner just liked it or to cover up some silver loss. Silver plating of Old Sheffield Plate has never been a good idea in my opinion and a gold wash would allow the patina on the outside to remain.
The bowl may have started out as a waste bowl instead of a sugar bowl. Today, for me it is just a pretty bowl.

Thanks ahwt! You have allayed my fears about the bowl. As I said I bought it hastily and then had a lot of doubts. That makes sense about the gold wash. I appreciate your input. Thanks again, Kelly
