These are photos of a lemon strainer made in Old Sheffield Plate (OSP). The strainer is not marked, but I think based on style it is late 1700s. The beaded pattern first showed up in this time period, went out of style and reappeared in the mid-Victorian period after Electoplate replaced OSP. Also Michael Adams in his book on Silver Lemon Strainers shows the open loop handle design starting around 1780.
The rim of the strainer has one area where the sterling plate failed exposing the copper base. I could not get a good picture of the sides of the perforations in the strainer, but they do show a partial covering with silver with some copper exposed. I have no idea how these apertures were formed.
I have wondered if the beads in this pattern represent pearls or did this design evolve from some other source?
The photo shown comes from Frederick Bradbury’s book History of Old Sheffield Plate and shows the only OSP lemon strainer illustrated in that book.
