The thread to discuss TW&S can be found in the SilverPlate Forum (TW&S)

This thread mostly deals with behavior....

Hello there.

I have just discovered this forum, what a great find!

I have a pretty ugly (oxymoron!!) frilled-edge, handled dish that I acquired somewhere and have no idea of its worth. The maker's mark is TW&S, it's EPNS and numbered 4409. Here are photos:

Any idea of its value, or more information on this maker? Thank you.
Regards
Cecile

sorry to waste your time, and mine

Hello Cecile and welcome to the site.
You'll notice in the Guidelines for the use of the SM Forums that valuations and commercial use of information and guidance are "no go" areas. This is because it is a site where information is shared between people who enjoy and study silverwork. Many of those involved are in the business, as it were, of buying and selling. They're happy to help others, but nobody particularly wants to dish out hard won education to those who may be bidding against them. Please do review the information in the big flashing yellow box, and if you're content to play by the rules, you'll be most welcome.

forgive me, i read the rules quickly, but obviously not well enough. i understand people's need to protect their commercial interests, but did not appreciate the tone of this reply. i rarely flame anyone, but this is an appalling way to greet a newcomer.

i thought that forums were for the sharing of information between all interested parties, and if you have a newbie looking for information the first thing anyone would want to do is help point them towards a place where they can confirm their query. forget that i was looking for a value. i'm not interested in harming anyone's business.

what a shame that the first person who answered me basically gave me a warning. hard won education? what a tosser you are. what is hard won education anyway, isn't it for sharing with others? this is probably the rudest reply i've ever had in a new forum, and if this is the general kind of repliy i am going to receive, i won't be posting again

Cecile, I'm sorry you took it that way, as it wasn't intended to offend. The guidelines are pretty specific on the commerce/valuation thing, for reasons most members would agree with.

adelapt - I think your response to this lady's (?) enquiry was firm , friendly, informative, and appropriate.

Hers was only informative, it told me all I needed to know about her

Hallo Cecile
Your use of [snip] store pictures did not help either. Forum rules are not that difficult to understand - if you are a collector and interested in silver. Then forum rules are plain simple normal behavior.
When it comes to people taking advantage of collectors - they find it very difficult to understand rules.

That being the case - we have collectors getting tired of explaining this over and over again. Then sometimes it sounds very hard. But the reason is as explained by me.

For your question epns = Electro Plated Nickel Silver. but you probably already knew that.

Welcome to the forum.

adelapt,

Thank you. I agree with Clive: "I think your response to this lady's (?) inquiry was firm , friendly, informative, and appropriate."

Hose_dk,

Thank you, as well, for your support of the Guidelines. I do realize that the Guidelines must be difficult since English isn't your first language.

Cecile,

Not a good start... may be you will try again. When you do try again please note the following:

You said "...i understand people's need to protect their commercial interests,... That's not really what is going on here. Think of this as commercial free zone. For many of our members are curators and other professionals who participate freely here. For many it is a matter of professional conflicts and ethics.

you said "... i rarely flame anyone, but this is an appalling way to greet a newcomer. ... I'm glad to know you don't "flame" since common courtesy is the norm here. I do think adelapt greeted your first post with courtesy. If anyone should be appalled (overcome with consternation, shock, or dismay) it is us. When you signed up at the Silver Salon Forums you agreed to read and to abide by the Guidelines. You didn't. Therefore our good members politely reminded you.

Your response to adelapt, although not the extreme type of "flame" that is often seen elsewhere on the internet, it felt "Flameish".

If you share our passion for sharing and learning and can follow our Guidelines then you are a welcomed new member.

I suggest you try posting this again once the item is no longer a part of your sales inventory.

If you are really interested in learning about Antique Silver there are several excellent museum collections and other resources in Australia. If you explore your Australian silver resources, I am sure we all would like to learn about them.

When you do return, please reintroduce yourself. Thanks.
