Hi -
as a collector I expect or give answers in a silver forum. As nobody knows who is behind the pseudo - the answer could be from a super expert or a newcomer. Vice versa with questions. You can not avoid giving your knowledge to the "wrong" people. In my opinion a serious dealer should learn his trade, do his homework and make his mistakes to learn more. But in times of internet and decreasing numbers of customers most of the dealers work with ..ay or other online auctions. Every housewife start an online antique sale without knowing her business. So the easyest way is to ask others ...
Best example is this silverbelt: every person involved in silver selling/handling (and doing her/his homework regularly) would know instantly where this belt is from and what technique is used. For the age you must have read some books. But why all this effort when you can get answers for free!!
You even have not to thank for it!

That is the reason why I am sometimes fed up with answering all this common and simple questions which were answered countless times before. Why using a search funktion?
Some fool want to be the first to answer!

Hallo Postnikov,
in my opinion it is not a oneway-deal. I am in this forum, because I will learn more about Silver from Germany.
You are right - there are many books, but there are some hallmarks - you will never find in any books. Thatswhy I try to make a little encyklopedia of old silvermarks from Germany - a wikipedia for silver. So I am depend on the pictures of Sellers to improve my work.

Hi silverpunze -

it is a big differenc if you just take the knowledge of others and give nothing back or collect knowledge to build an explicit list for the benefit of all, like you do! Thank you for your big effort!!

As a curator you are trained to and expected to provide information as a public service. Any queries I get direct to my office are answered the best I can (or have time for) without regard to whether I'm helping a dealer, or an on-line seller, or some poor innocent who just doesn't know anything. I do resent subsequently finding my information cited and attributed to me in an online auction--but that contravenes my mandate not to promote anything commercial; or to appear to guarantee my opinion on something. I used to be naive enough to believe that people wouldn't take advantage of me, but have learned better.

I rather bitterly recall once a person bringing in a gift for the Museum, and I excitedly explained to them how valuable and important it was. So they promptly took it back and sold it. Such treatment doesn't promote curatorial candor, but it's a hazard of my profession.
