[26-2287] Hi all, I joined this forum in hopes that someone might be able to help me find some information on a purchase I made yesterday at a little antique shop in town here. I'm definitely not looking to make a profit on these things or anything, I simply bought them to display in my house, but the more I find out about them (and it hasn't been much yet), I want to know more. If there's a story behind them, or if anyone can give me more information on what I might have here, it would be very much appreciated! They're a pair of fighting roosters, not terribly large though relatively heavy. The couple that I bought them from pointed out that the insides of each of the wings are stamped. They had identified the mark as saying "Birks", and as I look at it myself, that is definitely what it looks like to me, but when I Googled Birks stamps, I can't find anything that looks like the one I have here. There are other markings as well, one which I was only able to read after I had taken these photos of it. "Primrose plate" - is that a brand of plating? Or a style in which it was done? I can't seem to find much information online about just what primrose plating is. It looks as though there are one or two more stamps there as well, but I can't seem to decipher them. Any thoughts? These photos are the best quality I could get with my little digital camera. When I Google "fighting roosters", there are hundreds of results that come up, all in different styles from different companies in different countries at different times, ranging in price from $25 for a pair, into the thousands. I can't seem to find anything exactly like what I have here though. I found some that looked very similar in the body, but I've been using the wing shape (and the wing tips in particular) to try and identify them. Are these something that would have been mass produced? Is it possible that they are one of a kind? Any information anyone could give me would be much appreciated, as I know nothing about this and the internet hasn't been terribly helpful as of yet! I thought I might include this in my post, as I found it to be interesting, and was wondering if it might be of interest of anyone to here as well. ] (An Ottawa newspaper ad from May of 1979 for Birks silver plate fighting cocks) IP: Logged |

Birks is a jewelry store that also sells gift items. These roosters would be mass produced silver plated gift items. To my eye they seem to be cast brass or copper with electroplated silver, and they do not seem to have much age to them. Birks is still in business and perhaps if you contact them they might give you some details.

Darn. I was hoping there would be an interesting story or some significance to them or something like that. I was on the Birks website before I started this topic, and the "contact us" page seems to lead to their corporate head office (I tried calling as opposed to filling out the form online first), and I wasn't sure who I would even speak to about something like this! I'll try sending them a message and see if anything comes back, I guess. I just thought it was strange that I wasn't able to find ANY information on them online. I tried just about every search I could think of to bring up results. No pictures, no info, nothing! IP: Logged |
