Hi everyone, I was hoping someone might be able to help me out with a spoon I have been given from my Grandparents. It has WB stamped on the back with also what looks to be BANP and some sort of pattern after that. The front has what looks to be 3 flowing old style letters, Aed. Any help would really be great Thanks

Hello, Billy. Welcome to the Forums. It would help to have a photograph of the spoon and its marks. Also you should read the yellow box above and tell us something about yourself, so we know that this is not an item you plan to sell, because we do not give information for commercial purposes. Sometimes people pretend to be someone they are not - this is why you need to give us the information mentioned above.

We don't normally answer any questions until that has been done. However, since it seems likely that this is a family heirloom and thus not for sale, I can tell you that it probably (I say probably, because without photos this is a guess) is a Scottish spoon, made by William Byres of Banff, Scotland in the late 18th Century. He was working about 1778 - 1792. Are your grandparents of Scottish origin?

There is also a Banff in Canada, although it is unlikely to be from there - that is why photos are necessary, as styles change with time, and if from Canada, it would be much later, as that town was not there then.

Hi,

Sorry about that it was late at night and I skipped over most of the yellow. I'm a dad of 2 kids, love fishing etc I live in a small country city in Australia. My grandparents had just recently passed away and I was given a heap of there silver ware. I was hoping to find out about it as much as I can as I was going to do a little story about it all and put them in a silky oak case I'm making to pass them on to the next lot of grand kids after me. I will try and work out how to post pictures very shortly. I'm rather new to the computer world. We moved here from a place that had no internet and I finally purchased a computer and started to explore the wide world web.

Thank you for your reply smile

Thanks for the updated profile. This does appear to have a "town mark" of Scottish Banff amd William Byres' makers mark. I do not recognize the third mark.

You have some work to do on the image listings. Click on the pencil icon above the listing for this reply, and you can look at the way I did it. You cannot edit this post, but you can see the way it is typed.
