Has anyone found new information about the marks for Timothy Bontecou who worked as a silversmith in Savannah, GA until his death in 1815? The mark in question, a T.B, was posted by Scott Martin on November 25, 2001. Thank you. Susan

Bontecou

Hello:

I have been interested in silver since my grandmother gave me a piece of Alvin Old Orange Blossom sterling which had been a wedding present to my great-grandfather around 1915. That led to looking for more pieces of the pattern, and later to collecting coin silver. I am now concentrating my interest on certain makers and the late 18th or very early 19th centuries. I am interested in Samuel Drowne of New Hampshire; Harvey Lewis of Philadelphia; Joseph and Nathaniel Richardson of Philadelphia; the Lupp family of New Brunswick, NJ; William Ball of Philadelphia; Timothy Bontecou of Savannah. By the way, my son received all the Old Orange Blossom as his wedding gift. I enjoy these forums and am impressed to find all the moderators so extremely generous with their assistance. Susan.

Hello Susan,

I don't have any answers either, but I encourage you to keep looking to the forum for assistance. There are a lot of very knowledgeable silver enthusiasts on here and someone is bound to know something about the silversmiths you are interested in. I have been amazed at what I have been able to learn reading through these pages.

Susan: I don't know what information you already have, but an extensive amount of data on American silversmiths can be found on the following site: SILVERSMITHS & RELATED CRAFTSMEN

For starters, your silversmith can be found on the alphabetical list.

Sophia,

Welcome to the Silver Salon Forum. Glad to see you have posted since joining in September.

As you familiarize yourself with prior posts you will see we often refer to WEV's amazing and ever growing project.

Since this is your first post, please tell us a bit more about yourself and your interests in silver (as requested in the yellow box above). Thanks.

Drat, you caught me. And here I thought I could just slip in and out on a holiday. Seriously, I am a senior citizen who caught the silver bug as Adminstrator of my mother's estate. [I never knew she and my grandmother had silver!] Since then, I have been collecting sterling and silverplated items for their "history" and because I like them. I learn by lurking, must read and look at silver at least once daily, and will feel my life's work complete if, after having infected my brother with an interest in silver, I can pass it on to my two grandnieces.
PS Did I mention my other passion is genealogy?

We've had any number of interesting posts with a genealogical bent. One of my favorites is

English papboat - American owners??
