Hi there.

I am BRAND NEW at this so please forgive.

My dad recently gave to me some silver flatware with the "alfenide" mark on it as well as other hallmarks (other marks are an "icon" if you will and then a separate one with a 1 digit or 2 digit number). I have tried to an Internet search for these marks, but I'm still having a hard time identifying the age.

Any advice for a newbie on how to go about this?

Welcome Jenny. As mentioned in the yellow box above where it says to please read it before posting, photos really are essential. There are so many markings and many are so similar that without photos there is little that can be said. There are instructions in the yellow box on how to add photos to your posting. It is not difficult if you just take it one step at a time. In the meantime, I can tell you that the alfenide marking means that your silverware is not made of silver, though it is possible it could have silver plating. Please take some nice clear close up photos and add them to your post so we can be of better help.
