Hello my name is Diane and my grandma has left me some of her older silver antiques, and the more interested I became with finding out about the history I have discovered that the markings on the bottom are considered unknown. But during my research of this tray I have found an identical one that was made by Sheridan, but the hallmarks are not the same so I am completely stumped about this! I sure hope someone can at least help me to better understand this stuff for I am a total newbie! lol

I also forgot to mention the word silverplate is written underneath the markings.

As you mention in your follow up post, this is not silver but rather silver plated over base metal.

Markings on silver plate, with some exceptions such as Sheffield plate or plated wares by well known solid silver makers are for the most part unknown. This is not because they are rare, but rather because there were almost no controls over them like solid silver markings so factories could put as many different markings on their products as they thought could entice customers to want to buy their things with these markings that looked a little like silver hallmarks. And there were a great many factories churning out silver plated things as affordable wares for less affluent people so the variety of silver plate marks can seem almost endless. For the most part no one bothered to record markings by less prestigious companies on silver plate the way that has been done with solid silver.

It is possible someone here will recognize this marking, but that would be a matter of luck.

As for your tray resembling one by Sheridan you have not provided a photo of the tray or the details so that is impossible to comment on. One thing that can be mentioned is the lesser companies often made designs that resembled those of high end companies to increase their sales.

Thanks Kimo.

I appreciate the knowledge!! After I did some more image searches I found a lot more of the same tray images, so ya I agree that it was probably made by some unknown person trying to make it look like the top of the line ones!

lol.. but I did very much enjoy the hunt and learning a few new things and I think I will be picking up a new hobby!! But thank you again and thank you for the speedy response of your reply!

You're welcome. Could you please post a photo or two of the overall tray? The reason we ask for photos is so everyone can enjoy seeing the things you are talking about, and also so everyone can learn. Verbal descriptions are not very useful.

Also, sometimes silver plated things are as beautiful or even nicer than some solid silver things.
