Hi forum members,

First of all, it's nice to have become part of this forum, where I can hope to add and gain knowledge on the wonderful world of silver.

Second my question: I have a silver chamber stick in my collection of which till now I have not been able to figure out the origin. I think it's a late 18th or very early 19th century chamber stick, as it's design and quality of execution would place it in that time frame. It also weighs 237 grams, which is about the weight you'd expect from a chamber stick of that time. It is marked with the following marks. A Maltese Cross in a round cartouche (therefore I thought it might be Malta, as I've seen this mark for Malta before), a fleur de lis, a maker's mark in a vertical diamond (typical for French makers marks ca 1800) and the letter A. As I have no books on Maltese silver, I have not been able to confirm or deny my theory of it being a Maltese piece. I hope any of you can help.

Thanks in advance.

kind regards,

Kasper

Re maltese chamberstick, off the top pf my head I think that it is Italian. Malta is just off of the coast of Italy anyway. I have a small jug with this mark, also a salt, also a sugar bowl.

Hereby my introduction:
I'm a collector and occasional dealer of silver from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I've been doing this for just a few years now (being only 31), but it captivated me. My biggest interests lie in both old silver (pre 1800) and in arts & crafts, art nouveau, art deco and modernist silver. For me personally it is always impostant that the design is well thought out ("makes sense") and the execution is of a high standard. Some of my big heroes are Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr, Philippe and Marcel Wolfers, Christian Fjerdingstad and Antonio Pineda, but any quality piece tickles my fancy.

Thanks for you reply Pivulis.

Where in Italy would you place it? As the fleur de lis is one of the marks, my thoughts did go out to Malta, as there were a few French silversmiths active at this time.

In the following topic they have a spoon with a similar maltese cross mark where they state that the Maltese cross mark is from Malta, however the other marks are different.
Maltese marks?

The question remains whether my part is from Malta as well.

KasperT,

Thank you for the introduction.

It does look like Maltese Cross. As I recall Malta silversmiths were often from anywhere but Malta (i.e., Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, etc.) and a such the Maltese markings were influenced by the foreign marking styles.

I tried to locate our Malta references so far I can't find them. Maybe over the New Years Holiday I will have time to look again.

In the thread Maltese marks? adelapt was able to find a reference. He stops into the Silver Salon Forums from time to time and hopefully will see this thread.
