Having Christmas Lunch with the family in Longford, KS, Aunt Wava brings out an interesting find from what a man was going to THROW AWAY.

This is a pitcher with a lid. On the lid is a figurine of a man in what resembles a crusade outfit with a cross on the left breast. The pitcher's lid is a nice pour spout shape to match the pitcher itself. There is an engraving on one side and a symbol engraved on the other side. The base of the pitcher is a solid triangle shape. The handle is ornately patterned. The makers mark is "Meriden B Company" in one circle, "Quadruple Plate" on the other and "2L" and "U.S.A." below the two circles.

The image engraved resembles a "first cross" or "Royal Cross" with a Crown in the middle and a cross laying on it's side within the crown.

The engraving on the other side is hard to read but says something like:

    Presented
    by
    Em Sir J. S. Thrdson
    1900

We would like to know what kind of a pitcher this is, when it was possibly made, and what the significance of the images, figurine and all is...Basically would love to know the story as it's very interesting.

Thanks, So much!

Chad Agler,
Topeka KS

The inscription is actually "Sir J(ohn). S(ilas). Judson" who was a commander of the Bay City (MI) Lodge 26 of the Knights Templar, Masonic Order, whose symbol appears on the side. I suspect it is some sort of ceremonial vessel presented to the Lodge.

Referring to the same gentleman I believe, but to give the piece a Kansas connection, he was in Ellsworth, Kansas in 1900 with a lodge connection there.
