I want to do any advertising for the Mormons. But it is a fantastic job they do by providing the citizenbook on the web online. These ancient writings provide the interested researcher to create lists of gold and silverworker for the cities.
I do not know why the Mormons do that - but they provide me with it a valuable tool for my work.
THANK YOU MORMONS.

I agree that the Mormon's work on genealogy can be a very helpful resource expecially since they make it available to everyone.

The reason the Mormons do this is a very controversial one and if you are interested I would urge you to research it on the internet - you can easily find websites that provide the explanation and the implications. This forum is not the appropriate place to discuss it so I won't say anything more other than to reiterate that I agree that it can be a very useful database for researching silver smiths and their families.

Recently I have created master lists of the german cities of Halle, Cottbus, Saalfeld and Meissen. I think about how you could turn it into an open research project that is similar to Wikipedia openly shows the master found, and the data and the sources. Often sneak a read error that could be corrected in an open project from others.
The problem with this research is that one alone can not deal with in life is to find all the masters of the country - especially if you also still looking for the hallmark and maker's mark.

Best Wishes
T.

Yes, I understand completely. There are not enough hours in a day or days in a year to complete this kind of extensive research. For those individuals who able to assemble a large body of knowledge and facts, and they have the time to arrange them in a reference book with all of the proper footnotes and credits to their original sources, they often wind up not making money on the book since there are so few collectors to buy it, or they find that their months and years of research time are repaid at just pennies per hour. Most reference books are works of love by their authors who are kind enough to share all that they know with others for little reward other than to know that they are passing on their love of their subject for all future generations and that it won't be lost when they pass away.

Yes - this is, what I will say. And there are so many collectors with knowledge - but there was no one to collect this knowledge to an common book. But I try to to this for gold and silver worker from germany.
Every day we lost many pieces in the melting oven - lost forever. This is a big shame.

Yes. And the worst that can happen is for the price of silver bullion to rise to the point where it is more profitable to melt down beautiful objects than to preserve them for their historic and artistic value. The continuous decline in the value of silver bullion that we have been seeing since 2011 is a good thing for those who appreciate the work of the silver smiths. I think the bubble still has a long way to go down before the decline is over and I am glad that the amount of history going into the melting pots is declining along with it.
