I'm mostly interested in European silver pre 1850. One reason for my interest in silver is that it has stamps which makes it possible to track where it comes from and who made it. It's the detective work that I love. Some times I don't find what I'm looking for and these times I will post here so - hopefully - someone can help me out.

I came across a small silver box in my local antique shop a couple of weeks ago. However, I don't recognize the hallmark. It's a P and a crown. The seller thought it was French but I can't find any French hallmarks that looks like it. I attach a photo:

[Why are you researching this? It would be nice to see the entire object.

Sorry, but I don't have a photo of the whole object. But if someone can help me interpret the stamp and I find it interesting, I will buy the box and I promise then I will post a photo of it.

Well, I thought so to, but I could not find a really good match among Oporto marks (on the internet). Do you have any clue which years this mark could have been used?

I don't know the year, and I'm not sure how often they changed the mark but I believe most books only give a sampling of the marks used, not all of them.

I am not familiar with Portuguese silver, but you may be able to date the object by the style it represents. Most countries really do have certain styles that dominate different time periods. Perhaps a book on Portuguese silver may help.

I have no idea what so ever. Regarding this mark or Porto.
However the Crown cry 20th Century to me. Dont know if valid info, but I say the mark look fairly new to me.

But remember this it is a feeling and nothing else.

Earlier marks seem to have more ornate crowns

By the looks of the object it seems really old, like 18th century. But I agree with you, the mark does not look that old. Which is the reason I didn't buy it smile
