Alright, completely unable to post a picture, but would like to ask whether American silver had motes spoons.
I found a spoon at the local sale apparently American according to the seller. It is small, less than 4 inches long, shaped like a very small shovel with small holes in it. The end is not pointed like British spoons however. It appears to have the initials HB in a square cartouche with no other marks.

Put in the search phrase mote spoon in the google search box on the first page of this web site. (It is in the green box) Mote spoons have been discussed quite often on this forum and these discussions may answer your question.

The pointed end of a mote spoon was to unclog the spout of a teapot. The other end, from those I have seen, was shaped like the bowl of a spoon and was decorated with holes that would allow tea to go through while catching small bits of tea leaves.

Don't give up on trying to post pictures.

Thank you for your informative answer and I did use the search. I bought this for [snip]. Canadian. It most likely is not a mote spoon. It does have the holes, but the end is more like a regular spoon. I do have a real Irish mote spoon, so I understand the difference. I have no idea about American silver however.
Now to guess what other uses a very little spoon with small holes might be.
