J dot H inside of a indented square or four leaf clover, for got to mention, it is on a Cann 1st or 2nd quarter 18th century, thought it might be Hurd but looks more like John S Hutton NY 1720 from Ensko page 295... am not familiar with him... any ideas

Hello Smaug.

Welcome to the silver forum. I see that this is your first post here. Unfortunately it seems that you have not read the guidelines of how this forum operates before posting. - We're not being snoopy; knowing will help us help you and to welcome you to our small community.

AND

2.Post a picture
• It's not hard and will go a long way to getting other members to respond.
• Everything you need to know can be found in
How to Post Photos (click here).
• If you can't take a photo, try a drawing.

Hi Kimo,

I posted in the new because I couldn't get into the other areas, for some reason using my previous logon, I have been working with this site for a very long time.. search smaug or t-man-nc, but for the sake of info...

I am a retired executive after 49 years in the IT industry, have been collecting old coin silver for the past 35 years, my interest is in early American silversmith. why I am post is I am in the process of acquiring a piece from the mid 1700's and wanted some background on the smith, John S. Hutton. I saw that WEV did not have a mark for this smith in his site, and as I am nearly blind, I am having the wife take pics and send them...

PS I get my grandson to read a lot of the material to me, so I may not get everything entirely correct, but I do love the silver and admire those who can may so many beautiful things.

Thanks,
Smaug (ken)

We go out of our way to allow SSF members to be as private as they may want to be...

It is up to the SSF member to keep their email address current with the forum's system.

Members can have their password emailed to them by putting in their SSF registered email address here - Forget your password?. The system will then email the registered SFF email address the password.

Members may change their email by editing their user profile

Note:

If you change your email address, a new password will be created for you and emailed to the new email address you list. Thus, do not change your email address unless you can retrieve email from it to get your new password.

Please remember passwords and ID's are case sensitive. So TOM is not the same as toM.

Hi Smaug.

I deeply apologize for not recognizing you. I just saw the post being displayed as being a new member's first posting.

Do you have a closeup photo of the marking?

best regards,
Kimo

Nice to see you back, Smaug.

Look at John Strangeways Hutton.

He used at least two more marks than I show.

Sent along to me

The mark (which is actually J.H) does resemble the Ensko drawing, but I have never seen it on an actual piece.
