Hello all,

This is my very first post! I have searched through the previous threads but don't see anything quite like this. . .

Can anyone help me out with this mark? It appears to be a chalice/goblet, having a (maybe?) crenelated edge. The silver content is 750.
Germany? Scandinavia? As an added enticement there is the double (wedding?) armorial also on the piece.

Thanks,
Denise

Thanks so much for the reply! Here is a couple more photos. . .

The goblet is similar to Th. Martinsen from Tonsberg in Norway. But I cannot see that its him. 750 is absolutely wrong silver content for Norway.
My guess would be the central Europe, Poland Germany.

Could it be a tea caddy?

Very interesting! Can we see the inside?
I'm sure that is a tea caddy...

I think that 750 silver was sometimes used in Prussia, Italy, Spain, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania. So that may narrow the searching for a start. Then I see that the armorial on the left features a double headed eagle which does not narrow it much more, but perhaps that can narrow it a bit more. I know it was used in Russia, Austria, Germany, Serbia, Germany, Albania, Yugoslavia, Armenia, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Montenegro and possibly a couple of other places so that helps narrow it down just a bit but not much. My thought is that eastern European countries may be the most likely place to search.

Thank you all for your interest and comments. I believe it is a sugar box/casket, and after all of your input I'm going with German. Yes, isn't amazing that the key is still en suite?

Possibly, but German City hallmarks seem to be fairly well known and this is not one of them. It might be prudent to continue leaving the origin unknown at this point. Your thought that it may be for sugar is a good one, but the tea caddy thought is also a possibility. In any case, it was definitely for something that was highly valued to the point of wanting to keep the servants or children of the house from getting into it.

I would absolutely go for sugar box. And Eastern Europe.
