My spouse wants a silver tea set sometime this year. With spot prices in what I see as reasonable territory I will buy sometime soon. Besides the chargers shown in the last thread I posted we don't have any other silverware. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to look besides eBay and heritage auctions and what percent above spot is reasonable to pay for a non-monogrammed set?

A tea set would be very nice to have, though of course we cannot talk about prices here. You will need to decide how much of a set you will want to have as a full set can include a great many pieces including a coffee pot and a chocolate pot and other things. If your only purpose is to have tea then you might look for a set with just a tea pot, a sugar, a creamer, and a slop bowl. Of course you will need the under tray for it as well. If you want to be completely correct you would want to ensure the under tray is of the same pattern and metal as the things on top of it. Many people back in the day who were wanting to save some money would purchase a plated under tray with sterling pieces to put on top. Or sometimes trays have gone missing and dealers take a tray that looks similar and put together a marriage that is not quite right. The good thing you will have going for you is that tea sets are not in as high demand as most other silverware. There were so many made and then put away in people's attics when they went out of fashion so there are many available. That is combined with sad situation that not many people wish to have a tea set anymore as so many people have decided not to have formal tea servings and they take up so much room in a china cabinet or sideboard. The result is that it is a buyers market for tea sets for all but the most famous makers like Tiffany or such.
