First time posting. Thank you for letting me join. I picked up this pepper mill, and my search began. This has started my hobby and interest. From research, I found this to be made for ocean liners of the day. Any light anyone could shed would be helpful. Thank you, Janet

Hi Janet--
Welcome! I know some collectors focus on ocean liner "silver" (usually plate) -- so beware! You could be starting a new obsession.

There was a fabulous exhibition about ocean liners at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, which just closed. It featured some liner silver. You might try to track down the catalogue, "Ocean Liners: Glamour, Speed, and Style."

I can't be sure from your photo, but it looks like your piece has an early monogram of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (CGT)-- commonly known as the French Line. The catalogue includes photos and a short essay about CGT. Their monograms varied over time, but you might be able to find a date range, and from that, get a sense of what vessels might have been associated with your peppermill.

Thank you so much for that info. Yes I know it is the French line. I actually emailed them. Still waiting for a response. I will definitely look up the reference you gave me. Thanks again!

Collecting ocean liner silver plate flatware and hollowware is a fun area and there are many liners to include. One does need to be careful though in that the same silver plate objects are also commonly found with hotel names and emblems so you should be sure about any engraved emblems you find are from liners instead of hotels, unless of course you want to collect hotel ware which is another fun area to collect.

Thank you Kimo,
I will be careful. I have also seen pictures of the hotel ones. This was just something that caught my eye at a garage sale, when I cleaned it up and researched I was encouraged to find my next diamond in the rough.
Glad I joined this group.
Thanks again!

Just an update,
I was happily surprised today to have received an email from the French Line museum providing the name of the ship and date of commission. An encouraging sign that it doesn't hurt to ask. Museums are great!
It was SS Paris commissioned 1921.
Just an encouraging story to try everything when doing research. Janet
