Ted was the first antiques dealer that I met the dealt exclusively in coin silver. He died last month after along battle with Parkinson's disease.
I first met Ted at a Heart of Country Antique show in Nashville many years ago. I still remember his table as it was filled with Sheaf of Wheat and Basket of Flowers spoons. He had a real love of early American silver and it was infectious as he was the one that got me interested in silver.
Later after we started going to a market in Atlanta his booth was the first one I went to. He would often have some piece of silver and would say "Art you need this". And I always did and I still enjoy those pieces.
He will be missed.

We got to know Ted when he would setup a booth at the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show. He was usually setup on the far side from where we started but we often would make a beeline to him (and the books).

We are sadden to know this great body of silver knowledge is gone.

Ted was one of the SSF early members (06-08-99) and for a while was co-moderator of the American Silver before sterling Forum.

Most of his posting was in 1999-2000.... He became one the SSF many lurkers..... from time to time we would hear from him.

He will be remembered & missed.

Frederick G. (Ted) Stickney
1942 - 2017

Frederick “Ted” Grist Stickney, passed way in his sleep on October 28, 2017.

Ted is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Avos, his sister Louise, his brother Cliff (Valerie), his son Frederick Grist Stickney VI (Amy), his cousin Jenny Mullins, his nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Ted was born on January 7, 1942, in Mobile, Alabama. Ted was a retired business owner and longtime resident of Daphne, Alabama. He graduated from Andalusia High School in 1960, where he was named Most Talented, was the drum major, and played on the basketball team. He matriculated to the University of the South – Sewanee where he was a member of the class of 1964 and a Sigma Nu. For many years he attended college fairs representing Sewanee as well as awarding the Sewanee Award at Bayside Academy.

He loved living close to Mobile Bay, ever since spending summers vacationing on Belrose Avenue in Daphne as a child. If you were “early” to a jubilee, his floundering light was probably the first one you would see. He loved shrimping in the Bay, pulling his net behind his Stauter. He considered it a privilege every time he went hunting with his friends outside of Greensboro, Alabama.

One of his other loves was antiques. He was a renowned expert on coin silver and southern furniture, often sought out to help identify makers marks and patterns. He was proud of his collection of Herman Bischoff sketches. He was a talented cook. He was a past president of the City of Mobile Swim Association. He ran for the Daphne City Council in the 1970’s, remarking later that losing that race was one of the best things that ever happened to him.

He was a gentleman who did what he could to help out many fine people. He loved the dogs he raised over the years. He was funny and had a wonderful laugh.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne, AL. this Friday, November 3, 2017, at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that any donations be sent to the University of the South Annual Fund or the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church - Daphne Building Fund.
